A skip bin suits jobs where the rubbish keeps coming: a bathroom renovation, a big garden overhaul, or a weekend-long garage clean-out. Instead of a crew loading it in one visit, the bin is dropped off, you fill it over a few days, and it's collected.
Skip bin or a rubbish removal crew?
- Pick a skip if the job runs over several days, you've got helpers, and you have room on your driveway or property for the bin.
- Pick a crew if the rubbish is already sitting there, you don't want to lift it yourself, or there's nowhere to put a bin. See rubbish removal.
Getting the size right
Skips are sized in cubic metres. Bins that are too small end up overfilled, and most operators won't take a bin that's loaded above the rim. When you're unsure, describe the job ("bathroom strip-out", "two-car garage clean-out") and let the operator recommend a size. They'll also ask what's going in, because mixed heavy waste like soil, bricks and concrete often needs a specific bin type.
Placing a skip on the road
If the bin has to go on the street rather than your driveway, councils usually have rules about it, and some require a permit. Your operator can tell you what applies in your area. In fast-growing estates around Oran Park, Gregory Hills and Leppington, narrow streets and parked cars mean driveway placement is often easier.
What can't go in a skip
Asbestos, liquid paints and chemicals, gas bottles, car batteries and tyres are typically excluded or charged separately. Ask your operator for their list before you start filling.
No asbestos, sorry. We don't arrange asbestos removal. In NSW, any friable asbestos and more than 10mΒ² of bonded asbestos must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist. If you suspect asbestos (common in homes built or renovated before 1990), leave it alone and get it tested.
Frequently asked questions
What size skip bin do I need?
Describe the job and let the operator recommend a size. As a rough idea, small bins suit a single room or garden tidy-up, and larger bins suit renovations and whole-house clean-outs.
How long can I keep a skip bin?
Hire periods vary by operator. Ask when they call, and say if you need it longer.
Can I put soil and concrete in a skip?
Often yes, but heavy waste usually needs a specific bin and may have weight limits. Tell the operator what's going in.
